This Health Transformation Learning Laboratory is a collaboration of the National Maternal and Child Health Workforce Development Center at UNC Chapel Hill and the MCH Navigator; it serves as a repository for universal training resources/online learning materials in support of the Center's cores and activities.

New and Noteworthy

MCHwork MCHwork Microlearning Program

The National MCH Workforce Development Center and the MCH Navigator have teamed up to share an ongoing microlearning program, MCHwork, to actively engage busy professionals in the field on thematic topics over the course of five years. This ongoing program draws upon the evidence-based theory of spaced microlearning to ensure that learning happens in small bursts at regular intervals to maximize the learning process.

MCHwork addresses knowledge and skills related to some of the most pressing issues of our time, starting with health equity in year one and moving onto community partnerships, evaluation and assessment, aligning plans and strategy building, and communication in subsequent years. MCH Mini-Course in Resiliency and Adaptive Leadership

TransformationWorkforce Development teams are actively responding to the needs of our colleagues as they navigate state responses to the epidemic. This short video series (28 minutes in all) serves as a great reminder for each of us about things to consider in our own work during turbulent times.

Core Services and Topics

The Center currently focuses on three main topics: Change Management and Adaptive Leadership, Evidence-Based Decision Making, and Systems Integration. In addition, the Center has developed a number of learning resources focused on topics during it's first funding cycle (2013 - 2016) that include Access to Care and Quality Improvement. In addition, the Center offers a Pipeline Program to enhance training and networking opportunities for graduate and undergraduate students and promotes Family Engagement and Health Equity in all of its activities.

The Center offers state and territorial Title V leaders and their partners training, collaborative learning, coaching and consultation in implementing health transformation using a variety of learning platforms.

In this new era of health transformation, the Center uses cutting edge tools and techniques to move MCH one step further, leveraging health transformation opportunities to improve the health of women and children. We know each state and territory is unique in its approach to health transformation, and our tailored services reflect your reality. Our free services can range from a simple telephone consultation to online resources to intensive technical support, including site visits and coaching. We also engage graduate and undergraduate students who are considering careers in public health/MCH.

Major transformations in the health care and health financing sectors offer opportunities to improve public health systems, state and community health care delivery, and ultimately, key health outcomes for MCH populations. Title V programs are uniquely positioned to help lead and influence major health system reform initiatives as they affect women, children and families. In the current dynamic context, tools and resources to strengthen MCH capacity and skills in the following three core areas are available through the Center to move from evidence to action:

The Center also has established teams related to health equity and family engagement to ensure that our resources strive to support these topics and are culturally and linguistically appropriate and meet the needs of a changeing workforce.

Center Aim/Purpose

The aim of the Center is to strengthen the capacity of Title V agencies to be the "go to" leaders in their states and territories for the MCH population in the context of health transformation. In this area of a changing workforce and competing program priorities, public health leaders must have a strong knowledge base in three core areas: change management/adaptive leadership, evidence-based decision making, and systems integration.

All activities of the Center support:

  • Reinforcing the critical role of state and territorial Title V programs in assuring population health services
  • Utilizing evidence-based approaches to address complex public health issues
  • Helping states and territories implement and sustain systems change in the context of health reform
  • Advancing population health
  • Advancing health transformation implementation
  • Assisting states and territories in building capacity to influence health transformation

Our main audience is state and territorial Title V practitioners and their partners and MCH graduate and undergraduate students. We provide an integrated set of training, coaching and consultation opportunities to support states and territories in implementing and sustaining effective change in the context of health transformation.
