Annotation: In 2014, the Kresge Foundation launched a new initiative to equip local public health officers with the knowledge and skills to lead in today’s changing health care environment. Many grantees have decided to take a health equity approach to transforming the role of the local health department. This webinar informs attendees of the overarching goals of the Emerging Leaders in Public Health program, and showcases the work of two local health departments transforming their role in the community through a health equity lens.

Annotation: This interactive, hands‐on workshop provides background on process flow diagramming, features a presentation by a state from the National MCH Workforce Development Center cohort, and gives participants an opportunity to practice process flow diagramming using a simulated MCH process. Participants leave with a plan to apply this tool to MCH processes in their state/territory. To lead in health care reform, Title V agencies need enhanced training and tools for understanding complex processes. The National MCH Workforce Development Center (WDC) at UNC Chapel Hill has partnered with MCHB and AMCHP to offer intensive training to state and territorial Title V leaders. In the first WDC cohort, process flow diagramming has been a powerful tool for identifying areas for reducing redundancy and eliminating gaps in services.

System Change Yin and Yang, How To Promote Quality Improvement and Adaptability While Maintaining Fidelity Across Communities and Partnerships. Year Developed: 2015. Annotation: This workshop highlights both the tension and successes (yin & yang) of: 1) collaborations and partnerships among health care professionals, families of CYSHCN, and community partners, including schools, not‐for‐profits, and insurers; 2) use of measures and data to ensure consistently positive outcomes 3) use of a family‐driven systems change approach rather than a program based approach in North Carolina to address community improvements for families of CYSHCN and 4) allowing flexibility needed for implementation efforts across widely varying communities and health care settings while maintaining fidelity to the program. North Carolina’s Innovative Approaches (IA) initiative and Indiana’s Child Health Improvement Partnership (CHIP IN for Quality) share how they each created positive change in statewide systems that provide services to CYSHCN.

Annotation: This skills‐building session equips state‐level MCH leaders with the tools to address social determinants of health and engage their communities, as they work toward eliminating birth outcome inequities. It draws on the experience of nine local urban Ohio communities, who make up the Ohio Institute for Equity in Birth Outcomes – an Ohio Department of Health and CityMatCH collaboration. Participants are led through a brainstorming and strategic planning process that offers guidance for state‐ and local‐level interaction, as well as, the design and implementation of data‐informed, community‐driven upstream interventions. Furthermore, participants learn about tactics for engaging non‐traditional partners, in non‐health sectors, that influence policy, systems and environment.

Annotation: This archived webinar introduces a comprehensive self-assessment tool that helps Title V agencies assess health reform-related activities in states. The tool can help define a state's capacity and opportunities to leverage existing MCH skills to drive health transformation - in all its forms - for MCH populations. Iowa recently completed the tool and had this to say: "This tool was helpful for us to think about how Iowa's Title V program interfaces with the health care reform activities going on in our state. It helped us identify areas of strength and provided direction on important next steps as we move MCH forward post ACA implementation. Hopefully, other states will use the tool to ignite conversations in their states".

Annotation: Representatives from the Washington State Board of Health and Governor's Interagency Council on Health Disparities discuss how they use Health Impact Reviews (HIR) to analyze how proposed legislation or budgetary changes could impact community health. The presentation provides an overview of the HIR framework and methods, a discussion of who can request an HIR, and case examples about bullying and mental health awareness bills. Presenters also discuss their outreach efforts to state legislators and their staff to increase demand for their services.

Annotation: This course is a basic introduction to public health and consists of seven modules that range from 6-15 minutes in length. The modules provide an introduction to the history, achievements, mission, achievements, structure, challenges, opportunities, and future of public health in the United States. Some of the focus is on Ohio, however the course is still useful for individuals from other states as the Ohio-specific information can be used as an example of the roles and activities of state and local public health. The seven modules are: “What is Public Health?” “History and Achievements,” “Who is Public Health?” “Factors that Influence Public Health,” “Public Health in Ohio,” “Challenges for Public Health,” and “Public Health’s Future”.

Annotation: This training discusses various frameworks that inform an integrated systems approach to addressing the physical and mental health needs of women in a holistic manner. It is the third training in a six-part series designed for those public health and/or mental health professionals who oversee health programs and services for adolescent girls and women of reproductive age. The Women's Integrated Systems for Health (WISH) Online Training Series focuses on key components of an integrated approach to promoting the health of women during late adolescence and throughout the child-bearing years. This training series arose from the need for practice-based tools that advance multi-disciplinary partnership, community engagement and using evidence-based approaches grounded in proven theoretical models. Women's Integrated Systems for Health (WISH) was a training grant funded by the Maternal and Child Health Bureau and the Bureau of Health Professions in the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) in 2010-13 with a partnership between the NC Institute for Public Health and the Department of Maternal and Child Health at the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health and the UNC Center for Maternal and Infant Health at the UNC School of Medicine. The project focused on promoting integrative community approaches to optimize mental and physical health among adolescents and women of reproductive age.

Annotation: This video combines an interview format with a presentation. A handout of the presentation slides is available for download. The presenter describes the ways in which workplaces are changing in general, in health care, and in public health. He emphasizes the need for employees to anticipate and prepare for the effects of these changes on career trajectories. He recommends ways that employees can position themselves to remain valuable to their organizations and effective in new contexts, by identifying aspects they can control, taking action, and leveraging their unique gifts and talents. He discusses the need to develop a “career insurance plan,” being strategic about acquiring new skills and creating opportunities for career security and advancement. Dr. Martin puts all of these issues in the context of the public health workplace, describing new career opportunities related to the Affordable Care Act and regionalization, other scenarios that could affect the careers of public health professionals in the near future, and use of the core public health functions to frame career plans. Finally, he talks about maintaining commitment and energy by cultivating a positive perspective and creating happiness.

Annotation: Module 5 of the MCH Leadership Skills Development Series concentrates on issues of internal and external control as well as brain functioning related to change. In Mini Lecture Part 2, Dr. Gundlach lectures on types of change, the organizational change model and how to plan and engage change. This module also has worksheets, discussions and self-assessments for group or personal use related to institutional change.
