Annotation: In this series of videos, Dr. Lu explains how the U.S. Maternal and Child Health Bureau has been working in partnership with the leadership in State Title V Maternal and Child Health (MCH) programs, national MCH leaders, and other stakeholders to develop and refine a new vision (titled MCH 3.0) for transforming the MCH Block Grant to better meet current and future challenges facing the Nation’s mothers and children, including children with special health care needs. Dr. Lu explains how MCHB has used a three-proged approach to begin this process and discusses the evolution of MCH 3.0.

Annotation: The Maternal and Child Health Bureau (MCHB) Title V Maternal and Child Health Services Block Grants to States Program has established 15 National Performance Measures (NPMs) for the 2015-2017 grant cycle. In order to effectively address the NPMs, MCH professionals need to think about not only the evidence and strategies to make change, but also the capacity of the workforce to carry out these activities. Six skill sets have been identified by the National MCH Workforce Development Center to support overall implementation of the Title V NPMs: (1) advancing equity; (2) analytical and assessment skills; (3) building and sustaining partnerships; (4) financial and management skills; (5) implementation; and (6) leadership and systems thinking skills. The MCH Navigator in collaboration with the Center has developed this crosswalk to guide MCH professionals to online learning opportunities and implementation resources to support these skill sets.

Annotation: Healthcare Coalitions (HCCs) across the country have been tasked with supporting disaster operations in their communities during and after events. For many HCCs, the transition from serving as a planning entity to an operational entity is challenging. ASPR’s Technical Resources, Assistance Center, and Information Exchange (TRACIE) is hosting a series of webinars for HCCs interested in learning more about operationalizing coalitions. Annotation: This archived webinar focuses on determining essential core competencies for job positions within public health organizations. Key to a public health organization’s ability to successfully meet the health needs of its community is having staff whose competencies are well matched to the types of activities they perform in their positions. Job descriptions that detail the competencies, including both skills and knowledge, required for a position are good practice for all organizations seeking to build a competent workforce through successful recruitment, hiring, and professional development, and a required element for health departments seeking accreditation through the Public Health Accreditation Board. The Core Competencies for Public Health Professionals (Core Competencies) developed by the Council on Linkages Between Academia and Public Health Practice describe foundational skills desirable for professionals engaging in the practice, education, and research of public health. For any job position, the critical competencies within the Core Competencies will vary depending on the responsibilities and activities of individuals in that position. When developing a job description, it is important to determine which competencies are most essential for that position. During this webinar, a simplified form of the Core Competencies and a process for prioritizing competencies for job descriptions or other workforce development activities was introduced. Through this process, health departments and other public health organizations can engage individuals who are doing the day-to-day work within the organization in identifying the competencies that they feel are most important to being successful in their positions. In addition, Denver Public Health shared how they have used this process to identify essential Core Competencies for positions within their organization and built upon this work to strengthen important skills within their workforce. Discussion among the presenters and participants that occurred during the live version of the webinar is captured in the archive.

Annotation: ASPPH hosts a series of online study sessions in January to help Certified in Public Health (CPH) candidates prepare for the CPH exam.
