Annotation: This online course is the last in a series of trainings dealing with the development and evaluation of public health programs. This training serves as a comprehensive tutorial on the Evaluation of a Public Health Program. The process of Program Evaluation continues the use of pertussis reduction in Lakeshore County as an example program and utilizes the logic model developed in the "Introduction to Logic Models" training. The primary focus of the course is to explore the six steps and the four standard groups in the Center for Disease Control's Framework for Program Evaluation. This framework represents all of the activities prescribed by the CDC in Program Evaluation, along with sensible guidance under the standards to aid in good decision-making.

Learning Objectives: • List six steps in the CDC Framework for Program Evaluation. • Apply the four standards in the CDC Framework for Program Evaluation. • Identify stakeholders roles and responsibilities. • Compose evaluation questions to focus the evaluation. • Recognize process and outcome indicators. • Compare and contrast methods for gathering evidence. • Recognize sources used in identifying program standards. • Discuss strategies to disseminate findings and share lessons learned.

Annotation: This 24-minute presentation introduces the topic of adaptive leadership for facing complex problems associated with innovation, change, and/or a paradigm shift. The presentation discusses how adaptive leaders use a social leadership style, engaging in more relational dialogue, in order to wholistically frame issues. Adaptive leaders will adapt perspective to understand the others at the table better, understand the situation better and to help create a plausible leadership. The presenters explain why multiple stakeholders and real risk must be balanced with reward. The three types of problems – and tools for their solutions – that arise in adaptive leadership (technical, mixed, adaptive) are also discussed. When leaders are faced with the most complex challenges they need to bring the tools of adaptive leadership to bear.

Annotation: During this video, the speaker describes the current status of the Family Planning Program in the U.S. and the current issues affecting the implementation of the program. She begins by explaining that family planning centers are in 75% of counties in the U.S. and that for most women these centers are used as an entry point into the healthcare system and as a place for basic preventive care. She goes on to outline the reasons why family planning services still only reach half of women who need them and how important it is for family planning services to do more outreach into the community. Next, she discusses the limited funding problem that continuously faces family planning and the few sources of stable funding that exist. Annotation: This course is organized into seven modules around focused strategic planning. Module 1 includes video overviews of descriptions and steps involved in focused strategic thinking (FST), planning, management, and perspectives. The instructor notes that change is inevitable and necessary to further an organization, brainstorming is crucial to develop new ideas, and focus is crucial throughout the entire process. Module 2 discusses leadership and its relation to FST using a lecture by Dr. Jack Duncan on “The Mystical Reality of Leadership”, and includes an interview with Fay Boozman and Donald E Williamson. Session 3 concentrates on the specific process of strategic planning. In section 4, the instructor focuses on what the organization should and can do, the external factors and internal resources and the existing competencies of an organization to accomplish their goals. Module 5 discusses setting the organization’s mission, visions and values in order to form direction towards success. Module 6 focuses on developing strategies to set goals, while part 7 helps the learner brainstorm activities in order to achieve that goal. Annotation: This online self-paced module focuses on the competencies and eight roles of effective managers in public health organizations. To understand personal management roles, the learner begins by completing a self-assessment on their values, skills and management style. Several tools and concepts from management theory and practice are presented, including the 360-degree feedback tool, Abilene Paradox, devil’s advocate strategy, and balanced scorecard technique. The presentation continues by describing SWOT analysis, different motivational and resistant styles, job enrichment, and dialogue techniques within specific management roles. In addition, current public health managers describe their experiences. The module requires a pre and posttest to receive credit.
