MCH Cell: Session 2

MCH CELL: Collaboration Between Academic and Community-Based Organizational Partners for Health Promotion Program Development Courses
In Workshop #2 of the MCH CELL for Community-Engaged Learning Lab (MCH CELL) series, we highlight one example of an academic-practice partnership for a graduate Program Development in Health Promotion course. It included a description of how the partnership was formed, an overview of the program development course and the specific collaborative assignment, and lessons learned for collaboration on courses of this type. For the first part of the session (see recording below), participants heard from the presenters, and then participated in a large group discussion (not recorded) to learn from one another on how others have engaged in similar partnerships and courses, including challenges and ways to overcome them. We invite you to share this recording among your professional networks.
By the end of this session, participants will be able to:
- Describe one example of an academic and community-based organization partnership for a Program Development in Health Promotion course
- List three ways to make partnerships of this type mutually beneficial
- Provide two examples of how to decrease the time commitment from the organizational partner without limiting their engagement in the assignment

Learning Sessions
Ready: Introduction
Presenters shared the structure for the MCH CELL webinar series, including backgrounds of the universities who partnered to make the collaboration possible. They make the connection between MCH CELL and the MCH Leadership Competencies and engage the audience in thinking about who in the group has planned a health or social program that included a team comprised of an academic partner and a community partner.
Set: Partnerships and the Program
The presenters dig deeper and focus on how the partnerships came to be that formed the bases in a community-engaged health promotion course. Presenters shared a syllabus and sample assignment from the course and detailed the course elements. Partner engagement with the assignment was explained as a critical element. The team also discussed experienced and potential challenges and how they addressed them.
Go: Reflections and Final Outcomes
The presenters then handed over the floor to hear student and teaching assistant reflections. This flowed into recommendations for improvement based on experience and a discussion of the final outcomes of the project.
This collaborative workshop series is supported by MCH Navigator, the Association of Teachers of Maternal & Child Health (ATMCH)'s Innovative Teaching Award, and HRSA's MCHB Centers of Excellence and Public Health Catalyst Programs.
